His disciples were promised that they would share in His reign as King (19:20). 2 So the king summoned the magicians, enchanters, sorcerers and astrologers [1]to tell him what he had dreamed. In Gods economy, things are not what they appear to be. But I want you to notice Daniels reaction to the dream that he had. (3) What principles should guide and govern our attempt to interpret the prophecy of this chapter? In the euphoria of this grand event, someone might well conclude the kingdom of God was to be established within the lifetime of those returning to Israel. This also underscores that these four kingdoms go from reasonably good to unbelievably bad. (Numbers 23:19). Prophecy greatly benefits the Christian because it enables him to see things from the bigger and broader perspectivefrom Gods perspectiveso that when he suffers, he knows it is but a part of the process of getting to glory. The toasting of the gods of the Babylonians with the sacred temple vessels, recorded in chapter 5, may have been Belshazzars final act of blasphemy. He will also send forth His angels to gather those who do not belong in His kingdom (12:41). As the wicked prosper in their sin, it seems as though they can continue in sin without any fear of divine judgment (see Psalm 73:1-11; 2 Peter 2:3-4). 10 If any one is destined for captivity, to captivity he goes; if any one kills with the sword, with the sword he must be killed. 11 Then I kept looking because of the sound of the boastful words which the horn was speaking; I kept looking until the beast was slain, and its body was destroyed and given to the burning fire. 8 While I was contemplating the horns, behold, another horn, a little one, came up among them, and three of the first horns were pulled out by the roots before it; and behold, this horn possessed eyes like the eyes of a man, and a mouth uttering great boasts. The head of the statue was made of gold, the chest and arms of silver, the belly and thighs of bronze, and the legs and feet of iron and clay. Different from the first three, this beast seems uglier, more powerful, and much more hostile toward God and His saints. The end of all things is at hand; therefore, be of sound judgment and sober spirit for the purpose of prayer (1 Peter 4:7). The other three are removed from power but allowed to live for some time after their removal (verse 12). Daniel uses the expression Son of man twice. The timeline reads as follows: In my opinion, the most dramatic reference of our Lord to His identity as the Son of Man comes as the Lord Jesus stands on trial before the Sanhedrin and the high priest: 59 Now the chief priests and the whole Council kept trying to obtain false testimony against Jesus, in order that they might put Him to death; 60 and they did not find it, even though many false witnesses came forward. This beast is also unique among the four in that he grows 11 horns. The second time, the expression is used in reference to Daniel himself, as it will be used very frequently in Ezekiel to refer to this great prophet: So he came near to where I was standing, and when he came I was frightened and fell on my face; but he said to me, Son of man, understand that the vision pertains to the time of the end (Daniel 8:17). In his interpretation of the dream, Daniel told Nebuchadnezzar he was the head of gold. Since the last kingdom and the prophecies associated with it have not yet been fulfilled, we must in some way be a part of that kingdom. The angel told Daniel that at the end of those three and a half years the court would sit for judgment and the dominion (a word in Aramaic that means kingdom or empire and the citizens or subjects of that empire) would be taken away from the Antichrist, and the Antichrist and his followers will be annihilated and destroyed forever. 5 And behold, another beast, a second one, resembling a bear. The wrenching off of the wings and the transformation of the lion, making him stand on two legs and giving him the mind of a man was a picture of God humbling Nebuchadnezzar and then restoring him to his right mind, you can read about this in Daniel 4.
